so now let's talk about inclusion I have
to say when I was doing my research this
part blew my mind so I want to share
with you some things about inclusion and
how it shows up in the brain because
it's actually pretty surprising so our
brains actually track three aspects here
the first is social status friendship
networks and also marginalization and
this is again you know as I mentioned
before because our chances of survival
are greater if we're part of a group so
parts of our brain are actually tracking
where we are in in a group and in fact
it's the same part of your brain that
does math for ranking we're kind of
keeping a tally of where we are in the
group at all times so we're very
sensitive when we're starting to move to
the edge of a group and starting to be
marginalized now what was really
fascinating is that the researchers
found that exclusion lights up the exact
same part of the brain as physical pain
so when we break our arm we feel the
pain of that and if we're excluded from
the group the same part of the brain
feels that it shows up in the same way
in fact researchers were wondering if
pain medications would also help with
exclusion and in fact it does so if you
think about pain medications when you
let's say you break your arm and you
take a pain med it doesn't actually heal
the arm it just disconnects the sense of
pain you feel in your brain and when the
chemical wears off you feel the pain
again and then you can take another pill
and what I think is happening is people
are going on opioids for leg legitimate
injuries but while they're there they
get this relief from the social pain
they feel in their life they get a break
from it and I think that's why so many
people have a hard time coming off the
opioids even though the physical injury
is healed it's because they don't know
how to transition away from that relief
from the social pain and this is what's
driving the opioid addiction that we see
all around the world and certainly in
the United States let's look at symptoms
of long-term
exclusion people are less able to
perform on difficult tasks there's poor
impulse control poor Sleep Quality
weakened immune systems literally
getting sick more feeling sadness
anxiety depression helplessness and
unworthiness and this of course leads to
a likelihood of self-medicating with
alcohol and drugs and a substance abuse
and addiction and finally more prone to
suicide in fact Dr Kipling Williams at
Purdue University said long-term ostracism
ostracism
seems to be very devastating people
finally give up now you may think that
this is a minor issue but another study
found that 61% of employees feel
pressured to cover some aspect of their
identity at work meaning they're not
able to come in and be their full selves
that they feel like they might be
excluded if they showed up as they
really are it's 83% for lesbian gay
bisexual workers it's 79% for black or
African-American workers 66% for women
63% for Cho Hispanic Latino workers and
even heterosexual white men
45% who are often hiding aspects of
themselves such as disabilities
addiction childhood abuse or mental
illness so what does it mean to teams if
a good portion of the team is not able
to show up as they really are what we
know is that belonging is how we matter
right it's it's something that we all
crave and hunger for it's a biological
imperative and it enhances the meaning
of life and so belonging is what we want
everyone to feel and that's defined as
the feeling of being part of something
mattering to others how do we get to
belonging through inclusion which is
intentional acts designed to help people
feel part of something so this is why
diversity and inclusion training is so
important to do in the workplace because
inclusion is how we create that very
important sense of belonging so I want
you to think about how this plays out in
your organization
and next we're going to talk about the
